Guangyun (Guangyun), Jiyun (Jiyun), and Leipian (Leipian) state it is pronounced jie. Shuo Wen Jie Zi (Shuo Wen Jie Zi) defines it as the sound of breathing during sleep. Xu Xuan states: the character zi (zi) was considered by the ancients to be the character for nose, therefore the character form is derived from zi (zi). In Jiyun (Jiyun) it is sometimes also written in a variant form (huan).
