Pronounced xiáng.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it is a place where officials of the rites provide for the elderly.
According to the Book of Rites (Liji), Records of the Former Kings (Wangzhi): The Yu dynasty provided for the state elders at the Upper Xiang, and provided for the common elders at the Lower Xiang.
The commentary states: The Upper Xiang is the school on the right, which is the Great Learning. The Lower Xiang is the school on the left, which is the Primary Learning.
Furthermore, in the Record on the Subject of Education (Xueji): Every village has a Xiang.
The sub-commentary states: An educational institution established within a village to instruct those who have been promoted from the neighborhood level.
According to the Mencius: Establishing Xiang, Xu, and schools to teach the people. Xiang implies nourishing; Xiao implies teaching; Xu implies archery. In the Xia dynasty it was called Xiao; in the Yin dynasty it was called Xu; in the Zhou dynasty it was called Xiang.
