"Shuō" (说) is the name of a type of fish. — "Explanations of Characters" (Shuowen Jiezi)
The "Shanhaijing" (Classic of Mountains and Seas) records: The Liushui River flows south, emptying into the He River. In this river is a fish called the gānfù (䱤父). It resembles a crucian carp but has the body of a pig. Eating it can stop vomiting.
The "Yiyuan" (Collection of Strange Tales) records: When various fish are about to spawn, the gān (䱤) fish butts their bellies with its head. When the gān fish itself is about to give birth, they also butt and collide with each other. It is popularly called the mother of all fish.
