Mao Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Dagger-axe (gē) Kangxi stroke count: 7 Page 412, Entry 01 Ancient character. According to the Tang Dynasty Rhymes (Tangyun), pronounced e (rising tone). According to the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun) and the Compendium of Rhymes (Yunhui), pronounced e (rising tone). According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is defined as a term used to refer to oneself. According to the Expanded Rhymes (Guangyun), it is a term for addressing oneself. Furthermore, referring to the land of one's parents (homeland) as "wo" is an expression of intimacy. The Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu), in the eighth year of Duke Yin, records the phrase "our people of Beng." It is also used as a surname. In ancient times, there was a sage who wrote a book titled Master Wo. The Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) also contains another interpretation suggesting that the character denotes a moment or something brief. Note: The meaning of a brief moment is the same as the character for a moment. However, dictionary texts have never indicated that "wo" should be pronounced like the character for a moment, so this is recorded here for reference. According to the Supplement to Rhymes (Yunbu), the rhyming pronunciation is close to tai. The Great Mystery (Taixuanjing) by Yangzi contains the line, "Going out through me, entering through me; the leader of fortune and misfortune." The commentary notes that "wo" is pronounced like the "tai" in "tai xiaozì." According to another rhyming pronunciation, it is close to wu. The Eulogy for Bao De (Baode Lei) by Zhang Heng contains the lines, "Industrious students, the ignorant seek me. Crowded is the capital river, truly the western Lu." This represents the seal script form of the character.
