In the Discussion of Writing (Shuowen Jiezi), it is defined as the accumulation of trodden grain. Another definition is to be at peace. Derived from the radical for grain, with the character for hidden abbreviated. In ancient times, it was used interchangeably with the characters for peace and hidden. Also, in the Supplement to the Collection of Characters (Zihui bu), it is noted that it rhymes with the pronunciation yan. In the poem Chuiyunti by Su Shi: Though the rivers and mountains are abundant, the pavilions are difficult to make stable. When ascending and looking out, one cannot grasp the essence, and all phenomena appear rugged and unyielding.
