According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to be right or correct. Formed by the radical for correct (shi) and the phonetic component leather (wei). As recorded in the Zuo Commentary to the Spring and Autumn Annals (Zuo Zhuan), written during the eleventh year of the Duke Yin: To commit five acts that are not right. As recorded in the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), in the Narrative Treatise: The brilliance of what is right reveals a warning. The commentator Zhang Yan states: It means right. To clarify what is right is to provide a warning against what is wrong. As recorded in the History of the Later Han (Houhan Shu), in the Biography of Xun Shuang: The five virtues of rightness are all complete. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also written in a variant form (wei).
