Explained in the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) as the appearance of a house. Also used as a surname. Recorded in the Zuo Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals (Zuo Zhuan) regarding residing at the Wei clan residence. Also, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced wei (level tone), with the same sound as wei (level tone). Describes the state of nie-wei, meaning unsettled or insecure.
Verification: The original text in the Zuo Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals (Zuo Zhuan) for the eleventh year of Duke Yin reads "The Duke stayed at the Wei clan residence." The character "Duke" has been omitted here in accordance with the original text.
