Comprehensive Collection of Characters (Zihui)
Pronounced wai (first tone). Pronounced the same as wai (third tone). Meaning: not straight.
Commentary: This is a vulgar form of the character (wai). The Correct Interpretation of Characters (Zhengzitong) states that in the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), (wai) is defined as not straight. The vulgar form combines the two characters for not and straight to create (wai). The Comprehensive Collection of Characters (Zihui) provides the same definition as it does for (wai), but it is unaware that (wai) is merely a corrupted form of (wai). See also the notes for the character (wai) under the Radical: Stand (lì).
