Explained in the "Explanations of Chinese Characters" (Shuowen Jiezi) as the part of plants of the *Polygonum* genus that sprouts and flowers.
Also, in the "Rhyme Dictionary" (Guangyun), it refers to the appearance of grass and tree flowers just beginning to sprout.
Also, in the "Broad Meanings" (Boyao), it refers to the part of a flower or fruit that connects to the branch and stem.
Also, in the "Explanations of the Er Ya" (Erya Shu), citing the "Broad Meanings" (Guangya), it says: "Ground hair" is *shā tǎn*; therefore, *tǎn* is sedge, so it is called *shā tǎn*.
There is also a pronunciation of cai gui (rising tone), the same sound as "厜". There is also a pronunciation of yun gui (rising tone), the same sound as "觿". The meaning is the same. In the "Rhyme Meeting" (Yunhui), it is sometimes also written as .
