In the "Yupian" (玉篇), it is recorded that this is the ancient character for "wen" (闻). In Yu Shinan's "Temple of Confucius" (孔子庙堂), it is written: "With a joyful expression and a changing countenance, as if [hearing] the sounds of the Shao music." The "Zhengzitong" (正字通) states that the character's form is derived from "bian" (釆), which is the ancient character for "bian" (辨), meaning "to distinguish." The sound enters the ear and can be distinguished. Writing it in other forms is incorrect. For further detailed content, please refer to the section on eight strokes.
