Pronounced tong. A bamboo tube. Book of Han (Hanshu), Treatise on Harmonics and Astronomy: The Yellow Emperor dispatched Ling Lun to Jie Valley to collect bamboo, crafting twelve bamboo tubes to listen to the cries of the phoenix, which served as the foundation of musical temperament.
Also, Book of Han (Hanshu), Biography of Zhao Guanghan: When Zhao Guanghan served as the Administrator of Yingchuan, he taught his subordinate officials to construct yingtong (deposit tubes). Annotation: Shigu states that this is like a modern piggy bank; it has a small hole on the top through which money can be inserted but not removed. Some are called ying, others are called tong, but they share the same design. They are also used for receiving correspondence, allowing people to drop letters inside.
Also refers to fishhooks. Guo Pu, Rhapsody on the Yangtze River (Jiang Fu): Tong and sa (nets) with interlocking blades, fishing nets lining the boats. Li Shan's annotation: Tong and sa are both names for fishhooks.

Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), Thirteenth Year of Duke Zhao: The Master of the Bells shot his arrow, clutching silk in his bosom, holding a water vessel to drink ice water, and crawling forward. Annotation: The ice (referring to the cover of the arrow quiver) could be used to scoop up water to drink.
Textual Research Note: In the Book of Han (Hanshu), Treatise on Harmonics and Astronomy, it previously read Leng Lun. Per the original text, this has been corrected to Ling Lun.
