According to the Explaining and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a type of fish called xu ta. In the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), within the Rhapsody on the Upper Forest by Sima Xiangru, the term yu yu qu ta is used. The commentary states that ta is a giant salamander. It resembles a catfish, has four legs, and emits a sound like an infant. According to the Correct Character Guide (Zhengzitong), ta is what is known today as the copper basin fish in Fuzhou.
