In the History of the Former Han (Qianhan), specifically the Rhapsody on the Imperial Park (Shanglin Fu) by Sima Xiangru, it appears as a species of fish. The commentary states that the ta is a giant salamander. It resembles a catfish, has four legs, and makes a sound like an infant.
