As defined in the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the transcription of documents. Xu states that this means to copy over. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it means to transmit. The Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) states that it means to copy documents or transcribe manuscripts.
In the History of Yuan (Yuanshi), Records of Selection, it is noted that when transcribing examination papers, every line of moved text was written in red.
Also used as a personal name. Chong Teng appears in the History of Song (Songshi), Table of the Imperial Clan. The original form is written with the boat radical. The common form written with the moon/flesh radical is incorrect.
