Pronounced tao. According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen), in the Chu region, the ceaseless crying of a child is called jiao tao.
Also appearing in the Book of Changes (Yi): The nine-five line states, for those who are in agreement, they first wail and cry, but afterward they laugh.
According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), also pronounced tiao. The meaning is the same.
Also pronounced di. In the History of the Former Han (Qianhan shu), Biography of Han Yanshou: The singers first stayed in the archery hall, and upon seeing Yanshou’s carriage, they wailed and sang songs of Chu. The commentary notes that tao is pronounced like the di in di zhuo.
