Pronounced yu. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means thin or light. Also means extravagant. As seen in the Songs of Chu (Chucu): Shall I follow the vulgar pursuit of wealth and live an extravagant life? As seen in the Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan), Year 30 of Duke Xiang: Jin cannot be treated lightly. Also means happy; interchangeable with the character for happy (yu). As seen in the Master Lu's Spring and Autumn Annals (Lüshi Chunqiu): King Wei of Qi played the zither. Zou Jizi said: That which is grasped and deep, pure and happy, is government decree.
Also pronounced yao. As seen in the Satirical Advice Poem (Fengjian Shi) by Wei Meng: Pursuing birds and beasts, neglecting the crops. The common people are impoverished, while my king lives extravagantly.
Also pronounced tou. As seen in the Discourses of Jin (Jinyu): Living in idleness and seeking only to survive. As seen in the Excellent Words (Zhiyan) by Jia Shan: To comply dishonestly to seek favor. Also means clever and cunning. As seen in the Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan), Year 18 of Duke Wen: The words of the ruler of Qi are cunning.
