Pronounced tian. The meaning is to beat or to tap. The Song of the South (Chuci) states: The flutes and zithers play in a frenzy, beating the drums. Note: It is defined as a rapid drumming action, similar to the posture used for throwing objects. It also carries the meaning of to pull or to drag. Additionally, the Comprehensive Dictionary of Dialects (Fangyan) defines it as to raise or to brandish. The commentary by Guo Pu explains this as an action of scattering or winnowing. Furthermore, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced chen. The meaning is the same as the word for to stretch, and it is also written in a variant form (chen).
