In the Rhapsody on the Long Flute (Changdi Fu) by Ma Rong, it is written: Hu Ba settled the bridge, and Qing Xiang relaxed the hanging chime. The annotation states that die means to be settled. Additionally, the Dialects (Fangyan) by Yang Xiong mentions that in the rural areas of Yangyue, when people insult each other and consider the other person ignorant, they call them die. Die refers to the inconsistency between what is perceived by the ears and the eyes. Furthermore, the Guangyun describes it as the appearance of ears hanging down.
