Pronounced tao. Resembles a drum but is smaller; when the handle is held and shaken, the ear-like objects on both sides strike the drum skin. According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), a large version is called ma and a small version is called liao. It also refers to a small drum with a handle.

Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Spring Offices, Grand Master of Music: The thunder-drum and thunder-tao are played during performances at the round mound on the ground. The spirit-drum and spirit-tao are played at the square mound in the marshes. The road-drum and road-tao are played inside the ancestral temple.
Book of Rites (Liji), Royal Regulations: When the Son of Heaven confers musical instruments upon those of the earl, viscount, or baron ranks, the tao is used to lead the procession.
