According to Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Meetings (Yunhui), and Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun), the pronunciation is sou (rising tone). It is the same as the character for blind person. The Dictionary of Characters (Zilin) defines it as a person who has eye sockets but no pupils. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), it refers to blind musicians performing music. The commentary notes that ancient musicians were all blind because their hearing was acute, making them skilled at distinguishing musical temperaments. It also serves as a term of address for an elder. In the Book of Documents (Shujing), it is written to respectfully visit an elderly blind person. The Cai Commentary states that sou is a term of respect for an elder. It is also written in the variant form sou. Additionally, according to Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is pronounced sou (level tone). According to Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced xiao (level tone), with the same meaning.
