Zi Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Person (rén) Entry: Sou Kangxi Stroke Count: 12 Page 112, Entry 09 According to the Book of Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), this character is the same as the character pronounced sou. In the Yangzi Dialect (Fangyan), the term sou-ai refers to an elder. In the regions of Qi, Lu, and Wei, this is the respectful term used for an old person. In the Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), during the twelfth year of the reign of Duke Xuan, it is written: Zhao Sou remained in the rear; he was angered and ordered to descend. The commentary explains: Sou is a term for an elder. It is also used as a personal name. In the Spring and Autumn period, there was a high official of the State of Qi named Gongsun Sou. It is also written in a variant form (zhuan).
