Ancient form. Pronounced song (falling tone).
In the Shuo Wen Jie Zi (Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters), it means to dispatch or send away.
Book of Odes (Shijing): To see someone off into the distance in the wilderness.
Book of Rites (Liji): When an envoy returns, one must bow and see them off outside the gate.
According to the Zeng Yun (Expanded Rhymes), it means to carry or bring along.
Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili): The guest bows twice and touches their head to the ground to present gifts.
Also: The lord bows to present sweet wine.
According to the Zheng Yun (Correct Rhymes), giving gifts to someone departing is called song, and seeing someone off on a long journey is called song.
Book of Odes (Shijing): I see my uncle off.
Also, zhu song refers to criminals implicating one another.
Book of Han (Hanshu): Then they summoned those who had committed crimes and ordered them to implicate one another by the thousands; this was called zhu song.
Annotation: The one who arrives first is the main stump, and those who are implicated are sent by their roots and stumps.
Also, mu song, to see someone off with one's gaze.
Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan): To meet them with one's eyes and follow them with one's gaze.
Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji): The four men hurried out, and the Emperor followed them with his gaze.
Also, zong song describes the appearance of being skilled at archery.
Book of Odes (Shijing): Suppressing and releasing.
Annotation: Releasing the arrow is called zong, and pulling back the bowstring is called song.
