Commentary: Sui refers to the practice of presenting clothing to the deceased. According to ritual regulations, presenting clothing to a deceased person of equal status is called sui. Sui is a way of fulfilling their aspirations during life.
Rites of Zhou (Zhouli): In times of famine or bereavement, one is responsible for receiving gifts of jade for the mouth, clothing, property, and ceremonial jade objects presented by others.
Miscellaneous Records of the Western Capital (Xijing zaji): The younger sister of Zhao Feiyan wrote in a letter: Respectfully presenting thirty-five items of sui to express my feelings of joy and inspiration. According to this record, sui is not exclusively used for funeral rites.
