Zi Collection, Upper Volume, Page 25, Entry 01 The character 莎 is a corruption of 䔋. Li Shizhen, in his commentary on 莎 wood in the "Compendium of Materia Medica" (Bencao Gangmu), states: The character 䔋 is not recorded in any rhyme dictionaries. Only the annotation for the character 莎 in "Tang Yun" (Sun Mian) says: The tree resembles a *guanglang*. Therefore, the character 䔋 should be written as 莎, from "shāyī" (蓑衣), because its leaves hang down dispersedly like a straw rain cape, hence it is called 莎.
