Pronounced sun.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): A son's son. Composed of child and connect. Connect implies continuation, denoting the descendants who carry on the ancestral line.
Erya: Explaining Kinship: A son's son is a sun, and the son of a sun is a zengsun (great-grandson).
Zhu Xi says: Zeng means overlapping or repeated. From great-grandson onward to the most distant generations, all can be referred to in this manner. Furthermore, anyone who presides over sacrifices is called a xiaosun (filial grandson) when presiding over internal ancestral rites, and a zengsun when presiding over external rites.
Book of Odes (Shijing): The spirits arrive to partake of the offering, the filial grandson receives blessings and good fortune.
Book of Documents (Shujing): Proclaiming to the Sovereign Heaven and the Queen Earth, and to the famous mountains and great rivers traversed: It is only the virtuous great-grandson of the Zhou king, Fa.
