The Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili), in the section on the Capping Ceremony for an Ordinary Officer (Shiguanli), records that the sparrow-colored cap, the skin cap, and the black cloth cap are each placed within a suan container. The commentary notes that suan is the name for a type of bamboo vessel, equivalent to modern-day hat boxes. Furthermore, the Jade Chapters (Yupian) explains it as a vessel for holding rice.
