Pronounced xǐng (rising tone) according to Tangyun, Jiyun, Yunhui, and Zhengyun. The sound is the same as the character for省 (xǐng).
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a slight reduction. Another source suggests it refers to a water gate, while another suggests it is the name of a river. It also refers to the name of a hill. The Er Ya (Erya), in the chapter Explaining Hills (Shiqiu), records: A hill from which water flows out of the front is called Shengqiu.
It is also a surname. There is a person named Sheng Zao mentioned in the Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan).
Pronounced shěng (falling rising tone) according to Tangyun and Jiyun. The meaning is the same as the character for 眚 (shěng).
Textual research: It is also a surname. The Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan) contains a person named Sheng Zao. Based on the original text of the Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan) from the thirty-first year of Duke Xiang, the name has been corrected from Sheng Zao to Sheng Zao.
