According to the Sound Compendium (Jiyun), it is pronounced shāo. It refers to the stern of a boat. According to the Five Sounds Compendium (Wuyin Jiyun), it is pronounced shào. It is the name of a type of boat. According to the Guide to Correct Characters (Zhengzitong), nowadays, ships used by soldiers responsible for reconnaissance and patrol are commonly called scout boats (shào chuán), pronounced similarly to zào. There is another name for them called golden-winged (jīnchì). Historically, Fan Yi said to Yuan Xian: Both Jingkou and Caishi require elite soldiers, and two hundred golden-winged boats should be dispatched. Note: Golden-winged refers to a scout boat, indicating that it is very swift.
