Pronounced shi. A type of bamboo. According to the Classic of Divine Wonders (Shenyi Jing), the screen bamboo, also called taiji, grows one hundred feet high and twenty-five to twenty-six feet in circumference; in the south, it is used to make boats.
Also refers to a bamboo utensil. It has holes and is used for sifting items, removing the coarse and retaining the fine. In the Biography of Jia Shan in the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), it mentions sifting soil to build the E-fang Palace. The commentary by Shigu notes that this refers to using a bamboo sifter.
Also pronounced sa (level tone). It can be used to remove the coarse and retain the fine. In the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is also written in the variant forms si and shi.
