Tang Rhymes (Tangyun) and Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) state it is pronounced shiele.
Jade Chapter (Yupian) records it as shiejue.
Classified Chapters (Leipian) explains it as an insect of the cicada family.
The Dialect (Fangyan) by Yang Xiong mentions: the shiejue is called xilao in the Qi region, huigu in the Chu region, also known as linggu in some places, and is called shiejue in the Qin region.
It has another pronunciation of zhe. The meaning is the same.
There is also the term diaoshe. For a detailed explanation, see the note under the entry for the character diao.
Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) records that it is sometimes also written in a variant form (kuo).
