The *Shuowen Jiezi* explains it as: to point at someone and laugh. The *Jiyun* states: pointing at someone and laughing is called "㰮". Additionally, in the *Jiyun* and *Leipian*, it is also pronounced shí (falling tone) and rèn (falling tone), with the same pronunciation as "shèn" (cautious). The meaning is the same. The *Shuowen Jiezi* originally wrote it as "㰮". The *Zhengzitong* considers it to be interchangeable with the character "辴".
