From the Tang Rhyme Compendium (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), and Standard Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced shàn, deriving from *shí zhàn qiè*. The Explanations of Words (Shuowen Jiezi) states that Shanshan was the name of a kingdom in the Western Regions. The Treatise on the Western Regions in the Book of Han (Hanshu) records that Shanshan was originally called Loulan, and its name was changed in the fourth year of the Yuanfeng reign. Also, from the Guangyun, it is the name of a prefecture. During the Tang Dynasty, Zhang Shougui was appointed as the Prefect of Shanzhou. Also, from the Guangyun, pronounced shàn, deriving from *cháng yǎn qiè*; and from the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), and Standard Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced shàn, deriving from *shàng yǎn qiè*. The meaning is the same.
