According to the Explaining and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), this refers to a house.
According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), this refers to a modern porch.
Also, according to the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), it is used interchangeably with the character for summer (xia).
In the Book of Rites (Liji), specifically the Tan Gong section: One sees it as if it were a covered summer house. The commentary notes that this refers to a wide, modern porch.
Also, according to the Rhyme Collection (Jiyun), it refers to a large building.
In the poem Climbing the Three Terraces by Emperor Taizong of Tang: What is joyful is becoming a large building.
Textual research: The Jade Chapters defines it as a porch of a gate. Following the original text, this has been corrected to refer to a modern porch.
