According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is a type of tree. It can be used to make combs. In the Book of Rites (Liji), it is written: Combs are made of shan wood. The commentary states: Shan is a wood with a white grain. It can also be used to make ladles. In the Book of Rites (Liji), it is written: The sacrificial vessels use shan ladles. According to the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing), on the Mountain of Wind and Rain, there are many zhou and shan trees. It also refers to the entire side of a coffin, which is called shan. In the Zhuangzi, it is written: For trees seven or eight arm-spans around, the wealthy and noble families seek out those with straight-grained sides and have them cut down.
