Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), and Collection of Rhymes and Explanations (Yunhui) state that it is pronounced xi. According to the Explanation of Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to expose to the sun. In the Biography of Prince Jing of Zhongshan from the History of the Former Han (Qian Han Shu), it is written: I have heard that when the white sun casts its light, even the hidden and dark places are illuminated. The commentary by Yan Shigu states: This means to expose to the sun.
Additionally, according to the Extensive Rhyme (Guangyun), the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), the Collection of Rhymes and Explanations (Yunhui), and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is pronounced shai. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it means to dry things in the sun. It is also written in a variant form.
Furthermore, according to the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced sha. The meaning is the same.
