Pronounced sha. According to the Shuowen Jiezi, it means to sip or drink. Another interpretation refers to the smearing of blood. Those forming an alliance smear blood on their lips, which is called smearing blood. In the Huainanzi (Huainanzi), it is noted that the Hu people play bones, the Yue people bite their arms, and the people of the Central Plains smear blood; their methods differ, but they all serve to express consistent trust. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), it is written that the King should smear blood to establish the alliance of the vertical axis. It is also written as a variant form (sha). In the Book of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu), it is written that blood was smeared at Kunyang. It is also written as a variant form (sha). In the Book of Han (Hanshu), it is written that blood was smeared to form an alliance. In the Jiyun, it is sometimes written as a variant form (ha).
