Pronounced ru. The name of a river. Discussion of the Origins of Chinese Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) states: The Ru River originates in Gu'an County, Zhuo Commandery, and flows east into the Qisi River. The Record of Universal Geography (Guangyu Ji) states: The Ru River originates in Qiongdushan, Yi Prefecture. Another name is the Shengnyu River. There is another river that originates in Cangwu. Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijing Zhu) states: There is a river that originates in the Ru Mountains, northwest of Yongfeng County.
Also means to soak or moisten. Book of Odes (Shijing), Beifeng section, says: When the river rises, it does not wet the axle ends.
Also means slow or sluggish. Mencius says: Why this sluggishness?
Also means bright and glossy. Book of Odes (Shijing), Xiaoya section, says: The six reins are as glossy as if soaked in oil.
Also means to infiltrate or penetrate. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Canggong, says: If not treated quickly, the illness will certainly penetrate the kidneys.
Also means moist or soft. Book of Rites (Liji), Qu Li section, says: Bite off soft meat with the teeth.
Also means patient forbearance. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Nie Zheng, says: Lacking a heart of forbearance. The commentary explains: Ru means to moisten. When a person's temperament is gentle and moist, one can bear disgrace and endure humiliation.
Also pronounced er. The name of a river. Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan), Year 7 of Duke Zhao, records: Duke Zhao of Lu met with the Marquis of Qi and the people of Yan by the Ru River. The commentary explains: The Ru River originates in Gaoyang County and flows northeast to Mo County, Hejian Commandery, joining the Yi River.
Also used as a phonetic loan for the character er (to stew). Book of Rites (Liji), Nei Ze section, mentions stewed suckling pig and stewed chicken. The commentary explains: Ru refers to cooking combined with broth.
