Shuowen Jiezi (Explaining and Analyzing Characters): To be warm.
Shiming (Explanation of Names): It means to be scorched. Like being burned by fire.
Zengyun (Additional Rhymes): A hot and burning breath.
Book of Odes (Shijing): Who can grasp a burning object without using water to cool it?
Book of Rites (Liji): Heavy rain falls at the appropriate time; burning wild grasses and irrigating the fields is beneficial for weeding, as if pouring hot water upon them.

Shu Xi (Jin You Fu): Wearing a lined jacket to resist the bitter winter. Wearing an undershirt to withstand the sweltering heat. The cap is stitched with four corners. The skirt is made with several pleated folds.
Bing Fu (Rhapsody on Cakes): In the early spring, when yin and yang alternate, the cold has already faded, and the air is warm without yet being hot.
Zhengzitong (Correction of Characters): The original version of the Shuowen Jiezi was written with twelve strokes. Later it was simplified to the current form. This is incorrect.
