According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the Rhyme Assembly (Yunhui), and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced ruan (rising tone). It is the same as the variant form (ruan). According to the Explaining Graphs (Shuowen), it is a stone second in quality to jade. In the Rhapsody on Sir Fantasy (Zixu Fu) by Sima Xiangru, it is mentioned as ruan stone and wu fu. The commentary states that ruan stone is white like ice, with some parts tinted red.
