Pronounced ruan (level tone). To rub or knead an object.
In the work Character Abbreviation (Zilue) by Ruan Xiaoxu, it is said that fannuan means the same as rubbing and kneading.
In the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), section Winter Officials (Dongguan Kaogongji), subsection Bowmaker (Baoren), it is noted that this refers to kneading it repeatedly with one's own hands.
