Shuowen Jiezi defines this as to pause. Xu Kai states that it refers to speech that is hesitant and lacks fluency. Yupian defines it as blunt. Guangya defines it as difficult. Liushu Gu states it refers to speech that is difficult to articulate.
Analects (Lunyu): The benevolent person is cautious and slow in speech.
Furthermore, in Sima Guang's Qianxu, it is stated that this term is equivalent to benevolence.
According to Yunhui, it is interchangeable with the character meaning to recognize.
Xunzi, Rectification of Names chapter: That which does not conform to this is called to recognize. The commentary defines this as difficult.
Additionally, according to Jiyun, it is pronounced ren (rising tone), with the same sound and meaning as the character for endure.
Liushu Zheng'e notes it is borrowed for the term meaning to know or recognize. Writing it as the character for recognize is incorrect.
