Pronounced qi
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means ugly. It refers to the false head used when expelling plague ghosts today. Note: Xu Kai states that this false head is the four-eyed mask of the Fangxiang official. The character is now written as qi. In the Commentary on the Fangxiang Official in the Summer Offices section of the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), it is used to frighten and expel plague ghosts, just like the modern qi head. According to the Extensive Dictionary of Sounds and Meanings (Guangyun), it is the same as a certain character. According to the Collected Rime-Dictionaries (Jiyun), it is interchangeable with a certain character.
