According to the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen), it means to worry.
In the Book of Documents (Shangshu), the chapter Pan Geng, it is written: leading the multitude in sorrow.
It is also pronounced cù. In the poem You Tong Fu by Ban Gu, it is written: Yong provoked resentment and was rewarded first, while Ding because of kindness was executed. Li sought comfort in the distant good fortune, while the King received blessings where he felt sorrow.
It is also commonly written as the variant form qi. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), the section Xiao Ya, it is written: bringing this sorrow upon oneself. In the Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), it is written as 慼.
