According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it represents the appearance of a dog running. The character structure consists of the radical for dog with an added stroke, indicating the dragging of feet, which conveys the sense of piercing or pulling. It also appears in the Book of Zhou (Zhouli), Autumn Offices section, in reference to the title Chiba. The commentary explains that to speak of Chiba is similar to speaking of chuba (to remove or clear). This official was primarily responsible for clearing away vermin that burrow into the soil. The sub-commentary explains that chuba means to remove. Regarding the pronunciation of this character, Xu Miao notes it as ba-pan, and Liu Changzong notes it as fang-mo.
