Jade Chapters (Yupian): A swaddling cloth, a garment for carrying a child.
Analects (Lunyu): Then the people from the four corners of the land will come, carrying their children on their backs in swaddling cloths.
He Yan commentary: To carry on the back using a device is called qiǎng.
Sub-commentary: The Record of the Investigation of Things (Bowuzhi) says: A swaddling cloth is woven from thread, eight inches wide and twelve feet long, used to bind a small child to one's back.
History of the Former Han (Qianhan shu), Biography of Emperor Xuan: Although the great-grandson was still in swaddling cloths, he was nonetheless arrested and detained in the prison of the commandery residence.
Li Qi commentary: Qiǎng means to wrap; it is made of silk fabric and used to wrap and carry a child.
Shi Gu commentary: This is what is now called a child's swaddling band.
Six Writings Corrected (Liushu zheng'e): Commonly written in the variant form qiǎng, which is incorrect. The character qiǎng is formed using the element for strong.
