Ancient form. Pronounced qiong. According to the Analytical Dictionary of Chinese Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to rapid rotation. Composed of the rapid component and a simplified phonetic element. It also means single, having no siblings, or having no one to rely upon. Sometimes written as variant forms. Also pronounced the same as the character qiong. It also refers to sorrowful thought. In the Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), sixteenth year of Duke Ai: I am alone and in distress. It is also written as a variant form. In the Mencius (Mengzi), the Book of Odes (Shijing) says: Fortunate are the wealthy, but pity this solitary one. Note: in the current version of the Lesser Odes (Xiao Ya) section of the Book of Odes, it is written as the character qiong.
