Book of Rites (Liji), Record of Learning (Xueji): Upon entering the school, one beats the drum and opens the chest (qie), which means to be humble and reverent regarding one's studies.
Commentary: Beating the drum and opening the chest refers to striking the drum to alert the crowd, then opening the chest to take out the classics being studied.
Ceremonial Rites (Yili) Commentary: A square container is called a chest (qie).
Sub-commentary: Square refers to being narrow and long.
Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), Thirteenth Year of Duke Zhao: The people of Wei sent Tu Bo to present a bowl of soup and one chest of silk to Shu Xiang.
