According to the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun), qiàng-liàng denotes the crying of a small child. According to the Book of Dialects (Fangyan) by Yang Xiong, in the regions between Qin and Jin, whenever an adult or child cries without ceasing, it is called qiàng. When one cries so intensely that the voice is cut off, this is also called qiàng.
