Pronounced qian (level tone). To gaze afar. Found in Zhang Heng's "Southern Capital Rhapsody" (Nandufu): "The azure firmament, gazing afar." The commentary explains this as looking into the distance at obscurity. Also used interchangeably with "qian." Found in "Nine Laments" (Jiu Huai) from the Songs of Chu (Chu Ci): "Gazing afar, obscured and dim." The commentary states that "qian mian" has the same pronunciation and meaning as "mi ming."
