Pronounced pi (falling tone). To beat one's chest. This meaning is found in the Classic of Filial Piety (Xiaojing) in the phrase: beating the chest, jumping, and weeping. This character is also used interchangeably with the character pronounced pi (falling tone). In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Beifeng section, the character pronounced pi (falling tone) in the phrase awaking and beating the chest refers to this character. It also appears in the Zhuangzi, Horse's Hooves chapter: plucking and beating the chest to create ritual. The annotation explains this as meaning to bend the hands and feet. This character is also written in a variant form (bo).
Pronounced pi (entering tone). Meaning to break open or separate. It appears in the Songs of Chu (Chuci), Nine Songs: breaking the fragrant herbs and spreading them out. The annotation notes that this means to snap or break.
Pronounced pi (falling tone). Meaning the same as above.
